Why India should get veto power in UNSC ? An in-depth analysis

The United Nations was established on 24 October 1945 to maintain peace in the world after the Second World War. One of the parts of the United Nations is the United Nations Security Council. It has five permanent and 10 temporary members. These five permanent member countries - America, Russia, China, France and Britain - have veto power. Temporary member countries are selected every 2 years. Its president becomes a temporary member country. India is the world's largest democracy, economic power, second largest population and one of the military powers in the United Nations Security Council. Still India is not a permanent member in the UNSC. This question has been raised for a long time. Why is India not a permanent member country? Should India get veto power? And what will be the benefit to India by getting veto power? Know in detail -

What is veto power?

Meaning of veto power.  If any resolution is passed in the United Nations Security Council, then it should have the support of all the permanent member countries. If any permanent member country votes against the resolution, then that resolution cannot be passed even if all other countries support the resolution. This power of the United Nations Security Council is a privilege in the Security Council which can stop decisions and can take decisions according to its own interest.

India's eligibility to become a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council

India is the second most populated country in the world. India is the world's largest democratic country with more than 90 crore voters. India is the fifth largest economy in the world. India is soon going to become the third largest economy in the world. India has a strong army and nuclear weapons. India holds a special place in the world in military strength. India has been contributing to the United Nations Peace Mission with many countries. Apart from this, India is playing its role on issues like climate management, terrorism. India's foreign policy is independent not only in the continent of Asia but in the world and its culture is "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam".  Which gives the message of binding the whole world together.

Reason for India not getting veto power till now

To get veto power, support of all member countries, especially permanent member countries is required but China seems to oppose India's permanent membership. It says that if India gets veto power then why not Pakistan. The remaining four permanent member countries America, Russia, Britain, France support India's permanent membership.

The second biggest reason is that there is no rule to give veto power to any country in the United Nations Security Council. Change in this rule is necessary. For change, consensus of all permanent member countries is necessary. Which has not been made in all countries till now.

Apart from this, some countries argue that new members should get permanent membership in the Security Council but veto power should not be given.  But if this happens, there will be inequality among all the permanent member countries. Some countries will have veto power and some will not.

India's view on permanent membership and veto power

On the permanent membership and veto power of the United Nations Security Council, India has repeatedly said that it is a responsible power. Its nuclear policy is also a policy of 'no first use'. We have never attacked any country after independence. And if it is given veto power, it will use it judiciously and in the interest of global peace. Which will develop peace and prosperity in the whole country.

G4 countries

Apart from this, India, Japan, Germany and Brazil, a total of four countries have formed the G4 group. And demand permanent membership and veto power in the UNSC. This shows that India is not alone in this line, but all the countries of the world are demanding changes in the United Nations Security Council. "India Deserves a Veto Power!"

Conclusion

There is a huge difference between when the United Nations was formed and now. It was formed by looking at the strategic equations of 1945.  Today, in the global conditions of the 21st century, the current structure of the UNSC is becoming unbalanced and irrelevant. If the United Nations has to face the challenges of the 21st century, then it will have to change its structure and include countries like India with equal rights. Otherwise, this organization will become relevant in the coming times. The organizations that did not change with time have been reduced to oblivion. India should not only get membership, but also true representation with veto power, which India is fully entitled to.
