"Will India-Canada Relations Improve Under the New Canadian Prime Minister?

Relations between India and Canada have been strained since 2023, but there are signs of improvement after the new Prime Minister Mark Carney took office. Diplomatic and trade relations between the two countries are likely to strengthen again.


Relations between India and Canada have been somewhat tense in recent years, especially after the killing of Khalistani leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in 2023. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused India, which soured relations between the two countries. Will the relations between Canada and All India improve after the formation of the new Prime Minister of Canada Mark Karne and both the countries will be able to establish relations again like before. Will the relations between the two countries be established as before.

India expelled Canadian diplomats in 2024

India recalled its diplomats from Canada in October 2024, including a senior commissioner and five other diplomats. Canada had identified these diplomats as persons of personal interest in the Nijjar murder case, after which India recalled its diplomats and expelled the same number of Canadian diplomats.  

New High Commissioner may be appointed

After the appointment of a new Prime Minister in Canada, relations between the US and Canada have improved. Now it is likely that both countries will soon announce new High Commissioners. Dinesh K Patnaik, currently the Ambassador of Spain, is likely to be appointed High Commissioner to Canada. On the other hand, Christopher Cooter Kanha has also been proposed for the post of High Commissioner from Canada, who was currently posted as High Commissioner of Canada to South Africa. India gave it in-principle approval in December 2024. But it is not yet clear when this High Commissioner will be appointed. 

Both Canada and India are important to each other

Both Canada and India are important to each other. Canada is a major source of urea and crude oil for India, and India supplies technology and medicines to Canada. Apart from this, thousands of students from India go to Canada to study.  Canada will never want that its relations with America are going through a delicate phase right now, so its relations with India should also be like this. Political is a different matter, millions of Indians live in Canada. Due to which friendship will remain between the two countries and it will be good for both the countries in future. As time passes, the relations will also get better. Right now diplomatic relations are going on between India and Canada, which indicates that gradually the relations will become equal.
 
Can the relations improve? 

The indication of improvement in relations between the two countries was received only after the formation of the new Prime Minister of Canada, after this there is also great cooperation between the security agencies of India and Canada. In January 2025, he met the officials of NIA and ED of India in Delhi. Gradually it will also reach the economic level and diplomatic level, for this the top leadership will have to take the initiative. Canada has started looking for new trade options with India and Europe amid the tariff war with America. It is in favor of increasing trade with India and Europe.

Why did the relations deteriorate?

  The main reason for the deterioration of relations between India and Canada was the Nijkar massacre of 18 June 2023. Hardeep Singh Gurjar was originally a resident of Jalandhar Punjab, India. After his death, Canada officially accused India of colluding with Indian officials in the massacre. After this, the relations between the two countries became tense. India told Canada about this that if there is any evidence related to it while being busy, then it should provide it to the Indian Embassy and not make unnecessary allegations. After this, statements started coming from both the countries and gradually the relations between the two countries started getting sour. Since then, there has been no improvement in the relations between the two countries. After the resignation of Canadian Prime Minister Justice Tudor and the appointment of new Prime Minister Mark Karne, there are signs of improvement in the relations between the two countries.
