Will there be a lifetime ban on contesting elections?


The number of tainted MPs in Parliament is continuously increasing. Out of the 543 MPs elected in the 18th Lok Sabha, 46 percent i.e. 251 MPs have criminal cases registered against them. According to the ADR report, 27 MPs have also been convicted by different courts. Now a case is going on in the Supreme Court against them contesting elections.

Recently, a PIL has been filed in the Supreme Court. In this petition, the leaders who have been convicted by the court. A lifetime ban is to be imposed on them from contesting elections. The Supreme Court is hearing the PIL filed. Meanwhile, out of the 543 MPs elected in the 18th Lok Sabha in 2024, 46 percent i.e. 251 MPs have criminal cases registered against them. Out of these, there are 27 MPs against whom the court has convicted them. Still they are sitting in Parliament after winning the elections.

Out of these, the maximum number of such states are 10.  There are 50 MPs from these 10 states who have criminal cases registered against them. Apart from this, 39 percent of the ministers in the current government also have criminal cases registered against them. In fact, this number is increasing in every election.
